Karina Batthyány at the Cuban Academy of Sciences
Karina Batthyány, Executive Director of CLACSO, was elected Corresponding Member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, by decision of the members of the distinguished Caribbean entity, which was communicated by its President, Professor Luis Velázquez-Pérez.

Dear Doctor Karina Batthyány:
It is a great pleasure to greet you and inform you that you were elected, on August 18, 2022, by direct and secret vote of the membership, as a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba.
We extend our congratulations and gratitude for your collaboration with Cuban scientists. We hope you will be able to visit our Academy of Sciences and receive your official diploma in the near future.

Karina Batthyány expressed her gratitude for the appointment, stating that she felt very honored by such a distinction. "which undoubtedly consolidates the historical and permanent ties that unite Cuban scientists with our Latin American Council of Social Sciences, in the construction of a Latin American and Caribbean region with greater equality, inclusion and brotherhood among the peoples."
La Cuban Academy of Sciences It is an official institution of the Cuban State, of a national character, independent and consultative in matters of Science, attached to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.
The first Academy of Sciences was founded on May 19, 1861, under the name of the Royal Academy of Medical, Physical, and Natural Sciences of Havana. Following the establishment of the Republic in 1902, the institution maintained the same structure and organization, dropping the adjective "Royal" from its name. In 1962, the Cuban revolutionary process created the National Commission for the Academy of Sciences of Cuba. In 1976, the Academy of Sciences of Cuba was established as an administrative body with the status of a National Institute.
Powers and functions
-To contribute to raising the role of science in national culture and to the dissemination of the scientific method in society.
-To promote the scientific and technical activity carried out by the scientific community whose ideas can enrich specialized criticism and provide alternative perspectives on the national scientific and technical problems.
-To promote recognition of outstanding scientists and groups, as well as to disseminate and encourage compliance with the principles of professional ethics for scientists.
-To contribute to raising the scientific and technical level of the country's human potential, especially of the younger generations.
-To contribute to the preservation of the country's history, traditions and scientific heritage, issuing opinions and carrying out actions that contribute to its preservation, as well as to publicize the example of Cuban scientists.
-To develop various ways of disseminating the advances of national and international science and to promote their introduction into general and popular education, through coordination with different bodies, agencies and organizations and through the improvement of the plans and programs of the national education system.
-Promote activities that stimulate interdisciplinary relationships and boost the potential of less developed territories, with the participation of scientific societies.
-Promote and strengthen inter-academic links with international organizations and counterpart organizations in other countries.
-Promote scientific exchange sessions between professionals of related specialties, as well as analyze and evaluate the progress of the Science Policy, issuing the relevant recommendations.
-Analyze and evaluate nationally published scientific journals, issuing relevant recommendations.
-To act as a multi-branch advisory body for any relevant scientific and technical issue, issuing the appropriate recommendations.
-Create expert groups to evaluate scientific projects or topics at the request of organizations, entities or institutions.
-To organize debates within the scientific community to discuss current issues, as well as to disseminate the currents of contemporary scientific thought in the main disciplines of knowledge.
-Organize events in coordination with the different scientific societies and promote the participation of Cuban scientists in international competitions and awards.
