Juca Ferreira: “Political awareness is not automatic”
Brazilian sociologist and politician Juca Ferreira, former Minister of Culture under Lula and Dilma, visited Buenos Aires and took some time to speak with CLACSO TV and CLACSO Radio. In a self-critical tone, he reflected that “Political awareness is not automatic. And the parties, the left, the democrats, did not have the perception that they had to build a strong social and political movement there, in order to have continuity.”
Invited by the National University of the Arts (UNA), Juca highlighted the importance of these exchanges, based on the observation, in his view, that "One of the mistakes is that we don't cooperate enough in Latin America and South America.”

During these periods, Brazil was one of the main drivers of the renewal of cultural policies in Latin America, assuming unprecedented international leadership, as exemplified by the adoption of the “Convention on the Promotion and Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions” at the United Nations, and the creation of the “Culture Points” policy, which was later replicated by other countries on the continent.
