Research on academic freedom
El Latin American Council of Social Sciences signed an agreement to promote a research project on academic freedom, democracy and critical thinking with the Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas (CLAA).

In this regard, the Executive Director of CLACSO, Karina Batthyány, detailed that “This project aims to deepen knowledge and understanding of the challenges to academic freedom in the Americas by identifying particularities and common trends throughout the hemisphere and fostering both collective research groups and individual initiatives; to create a critical mass of researchers throughout the region capable of contributing to this field of research and to inspire other researchers to join this work; and to disseminate research results in written and oral form through workshops and seminars, establishing dialogues with policymakers, UN institutions, civil society actors, and other stakeholders to advance respect for and protection of academic freedom as a fundamental human right.”
At the same time, Camilla CrosoThe Director of CLAA stated: “Through this initiative, CLAA and CLACSO hope to contribute to translating the Inter-American Principles on Academic Freedom and University AutonomyFrom aspirational ideals to tangible realities. We believe that interdisciplinary collaboration and sustained research initiatives can pave the way for a more vibrant and resilient academic community in the Americas, where academic freedom thrives as an essential pillar of democratic societies.”.
Finally, Pablo VommaroThe Academic Secretary of CLACSO concluded by saying thatWe must strongly disseminate the results of the research we can produce within this framework of the alliance between CLAA and CLACSO, in order to work on these issues related to academic freedom, the strengthening of democracy, and the promotion and consolidation of the scientific and technological systems of higher education throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.”
The project will last 24 months (September 2024-August 2026) and within this framework the present Research Call is launchedStrengthening comparative research and critical thinking within the framework of academic freedom in the Americas"which will support up to 7 research groups, 6 of which are in Latin America and the Caribbean and the remaining one in North America, distributed as follows: 2 in the Southern Cone (one of which will correspond to Brazil), 1 in the Andean Region, 2 in Mesoamerica (of which 1 will be for Mexico and another for Central America), 1 in the Caribbean and 1 in North America.
La Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas (CLAA) promotes the promotion, protection and respect of academic freedom, with the aim of developing relevant human rights standards that serve to protect higher education spaces, identify best practices and strengthen democratic principles in the Americas.
Its objectives are:
-To contribute to the effective application of the Inter-American Principles on Academic Freedom and University Autonomy that were adopted in December 2021.
-Increase public understanding of the importance of academic freedom for a democratic society in the Americas and protect the spaces where scientists, policymakers and advocates can develop solutions to society's problems.
-Monitor incidents that may affect academic freedom in the Americas and establish contacts with interested parties.
-Lead, support and develop a sustainable hemispheric network of defenders and allies, who are well positioned to identify and respond to threats, and generate strategies to protect and promote academic freedom that are consistent with international standards and adapted to local realities.
