The Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Santiago de Chile (IDEA) was created in 1993 by Rector Eng. Eduardo Morales Santos, with the aim of creating a center that would restore to the University the mission of the presence of university thought in the national public debate.
According to its founding decree, IDEA aims to become an instance for the development and implementation of interdisciplinary projects, a university-level contribution to the national public discussion, a space for attracting the academic community and the capacity to convene and project in the scientific (social) field, and a space for high-level academic training and projection towards the community.
IDEA, as an academic unit - dependent on the Rector's Office until 2004 and linked to the Academic Vice-Rector's Office through the Council of Administration of Centers, Institutes, Programs and Related Units, from that year onwards, carries out basic and advanced and interdisciplinary research and studies in the field of humanities and social sciences, to contribute to the national debate and aim to obtain assertive answers to some of the multiple problems that contemporary society faces.
His career, within the institutional purposes of improving the quality of higher education, is marked by research and academic tasks in the field of advanced knowledge in social sciences and humanities, especially in the areas of international studies, thought and cultural studies, sociology and development, contemporary history and environmental studies, emphasizing transdisciplinary collaboration, key to the development of current scientific knowledge.
The research, teaching, and outreach work of IDEA is structured around three main thematic areas to which the various researchers belong. These areas are, firstly, International Studies; secondly, Thought and Culture; and finally, Social and Development Studies.
Mission
The Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Santiago, Chile, focuses on research excellence and postgraduate training from an interdisciplinary perspective of the social sciences and humanities, with the aim of promoting American studies, innovation, and contributing to public debate from a regional perspective, helping to position the University in the national and international context.
Vision
The Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Santiago de Chile aspires to consolidate itself as a space for high-level postgraduate academic training and outreach to the community, as well as for research in the social sciences and humanities with an interdisciplinary focus, actively contributing to the national public discussion.

Manuel Bulnes Chair: The Institute for Advanced Studies on Security, Defense, and Society was created in 2003 by decree of the University of Santiago with the aim of contributing to security and defense matters from a social science perspective. This latter aspect is a defining characteristic, encompassing areas such as the promotion of civil-military relations, defense awareness, civilian training and leadership in defense matters, and the academic understanding of these issues within the framework of foreign and security policy. Distinguished civilian and military academics participated in its founding. Since 2003, it has been directed by IDEA researcher Dr. Cristián Garay. Its name comes from Marshal and President Manuel Bulnes, the founder of the School of Arts and Crafts, the predecessor of the University of Santiago. With this, the Institute emphasizes its commitment to being an active participant in national debates on issues such as the political, foreign, and security and defense management of the State.
EMERGENCIES Working GroupThe Emerging Intellectuals Program originated within IDEA-USACH, fostering the opening of new areas of work in lines already established for years and with a clear vocation for projection. Eidetic studies, especially focused on Latin American thought and that of peripheral regions, are a central concern of this study program, declaring the intention to lead initiatives that promote debate and research work in this area.
PROESA Working Group: Created in 2009, within the framework of the initiatives undertaken by the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Santiago de Chile in collaboration with the Faculty of Administration and Economics, and with other universities and academic institutions.
It aims to promote, particularly in the academic, political, diplomatic and business world, knowledge about Asia and Africa in any of its dimensions; as well as to investigate the reality of Asia and Africa from the perspective of the interests of Chile and Latin America and the Caribbean.
IDEA Working Groups: Chilean-Korean Study Center-Program (ChKSCP): In partnership with a Korean university, the project will enhance student exchange and research. Awarded to Dr. César Ross, it will last three years. The objective is to create a Korean studies program and foster academic research on the relationship between Korea and South America. With the aim of articulating and promoting Korean issues in Chile and South America, the ChKSCP (Chilean Korean Studies and Partnership for South America) is focused on: (1) promoting academic interest in Korean studies and introducing a historical perspective to new generations of Chilean students and professionals, (2) studying and researching, from a Korean perspective, security issues in Northeast Asia, (3) investigating the effects of a reunification process on the Korean Peninsula, and (4) promoting a better understanding of the successful role of the Korean government in the development of high technology and the export system. Rivar: RIVAR is a multidisciplinary journal, primarily based at the intersection of Agricultural Sciences and Social Sciences and Humanities. It covers food and agricultural products from both land and sea, encompassing cultivation, harvesting, raising, and fishing, as well as processing, packaging, transportation, distribution, marketing, and consumption. The world of agribusiness and value chains also falls within its area of interest.
The artistic representations of food and beverages, together with their cultural landscapes, are of interest to RIVAR, including the traditional end-of-harvest festivals, and the celebrations and festivities that are held with a view to making visible and valuing the food and products of the countryside and the sea.
RIVAR's objectives also include strategies for raising the profile and value of agri-food products in their various forms. This encompasses institutionalized mechanisms endorsed by states and international organizations, such as Designations of Origin, Geographical Indications, Collective Trademarks, and Seals of Origin; it also values bottom-up initiatives, such as traditional products, farmers' baskets, short supply chains, and other food valuation strategies.
Journal of Advanced Studies: (EstuDAv) was created in 1999 and invites the publication of studies that address the Americas from the perspective of the Global South. Its objective is to disseminate the results of original research from the arts, humanities, and social sciences, with a special focus on interdisciplinary approaches that show society intertwined with nature and science with culture. This includes innovative interpretations, analyses, and methodologies that bring together social, political, artistic, and philosophical discussions, preferably originating from Latin America. EstuDAv is a biannual publication (June and December of each year) hosted by the University of Santiago, Chile, a state-run institution of higher education with a tradition in the arts and crafts dating back to 1849. Its articles are open access from the time of publication, exclusively online, on the Open Journal Source (OJS) platform, and can be written in Spanish, English, or Portuguese.
