Institute of Social Sciences – Paraguay
Luis Ortiz, Researcher
The Institute of Social Sciences (ICSO), established on November 17, 2011, is an autonomous, non-profit civil organization whose mission is to contribute to the creation of a more just and democratic society through significant social science research. Its three specific objectives are academic training, scientific dissemination, and influence on public policy, based on interdisciplinarity and inter-institutional cooperation.
The Institute of Social Sciences of Paraguay arose from two convictions. The first: Paraguayan social reality requires a process of transformation to overcome its pronounced and persistent inequalities, to consolidate a social state governed by the rule of law, to deepen democracy, and to achieve the social well-being of the population. The second: the achievement of this historical project demands scientific research, particularly in the social sciences, recognizing that their absence or low level of institutionalization is one of the determining factors of the country's limited economic, social, and cultural development.
It is no coincidence that one of the countries with the highest rates of social inequality in the world has one of the most precarious scientific institutions. This precariousness reaches a critical level in the field of social sciences. Therefore, the production of knowledge from disciplines that study the social world is not only necessary and indispensable for informing citizen initiatives and public policies in a relevant, timely, and systematic way, but also implies a clear political commitment: to challenge a system of things whose very lack of understanding is one of the conditions for its persistence.
