“Inspired by nature, by the climate, by our future”
In this World Environment Day on June 5, 2026, under the slogan “Inspired by nature, by the climate, by our futureFrom the Latin American Council of Social Sciences, we reiterate that the climate crisis is fundamentally a crisis of structural inequality. Droughts that destroy livelihoods and storms that displace families from their homes do not affect everyone equally; they strike hardest the most vulnerable communities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Addressing the environmental emergency demands climate justice, the defense of agrarian sovereignty, and the recognition of popular and ancestral knowledge. From a critical social research perspective, we reaffirm that protecting the environment is protecting life, human rights, and the dignity of the peoples who resist on the front lines of global change.
Since its origins almost 60 years ago, CLACSO has promoted the defense of the environment and supported the need to think about forms of sustainable development, and dedicates one of its Platforms for Social Dialogue (PDS) to the theme: “Just transitions and sovereignties in dispute: towards sustainable and inclusive futures from the Global South”.
