Report on the state of open access, APC payments in Argentine science, and the situation of CONICET

Fernanda Beigel and Osvaldo Gallardo, specialists from CONICET, and from Center for the Study of Knowledge Circulation (CECIC, UNCuyo), in collaboration with colleagues from Collaboratory for the Linking of Computational Social Sciences and Digital Humanities (CoLaV, University of Antioquia in Colombia), presented a report that outlines a detailed overview of the state of open access in Argentine science and, in particular, the production of researchers from CONICET.

This is a collaborative project that offers a diagnosis of how this problem affects the work of researchers at CONICET. It also proposes ways to find solutions.

“The main objective of our study is to elucidate the effects of increased APC costs on publications by CONICET researchers, the problems this type of publication poses for Argentine science, and the various accessibility alternatives for these publications. The information we obtained is useful for making more precise, informed, and participatory decisions about policies to promote the circulation of knowledge, which, as we know, is crucial for the development of the country and the region,” says Beigel, the study coordinator, a CONICET researcher, sociologist, and PhD in Political and Social Sciences. She is a tenured professor at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of the National University of Cuyo (UNCuyo) and coordinator of the Advisory Committee on Open and Citizen Science of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
