CLACSO Report 2019

This report presents the 2019 management results of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO). In her presentation, Karina Batthyány, CLACSO's Executive Secretary, states that “the context in which this year unfolded can be characterized as a time of crossroads for the social sciences and humanities. Far from adopting a pessimistic view, we interpret this moment as a historical cycle fraught with urgent needs, but also with great hopes, in which many social actors work daily to combat the deep-seated inequalities that affect the vast majority of our societies.”

He then describes: “The closure of academic programs, budget cuts, the implementation of arbitrary evaluation criteria to assess knowledge, and the persecution of academics and intellectuals are some of the serious issues that concern us. The CLACSO network must take a clear and visible stance, denouncing these injustices and redoubling its efforts to support and protect those living through uncertain times. The best way to guarantee this is by allowing a plurality of ideas and perspectives, as well as dissenting opinions, because only collective endeavors that ensure this diversity are destined to endure.”

Karina Batthyány finally argues that “within this framework, CLACSO’s challenge lies in rethinking its commitment to the production of critical and emancipatory knowledge; the development of original perspectives from which to test responses to these problems; the articulation with democratic and inclusive public policies and the actions of social movements in all their expressions.”
