Impacts of COVID-19 on businesses in Baja California
The College of the Northern Border from Mexico
The College of the Northern Border – Interinstitutional Research Group (GIDI), conducted a survey on the impacts of COVID-19 on businesses in Baja California
This document, the result of the joint work of a group of professionals, addresses, from a research perspective, a current situation related to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the intention of collaborating with the actors of economic development and society as a whole.
In early April 2020, at the initiative of AXIS–Center for Strategic Intelligence, a work proposal was made and an invitation extended to develop this project. Building on previous collaborative studies related to measuring technological change in companies, the project brings together researchers from El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, El Colegio de Sonora, Arizona State University, and the firm Ruiz Morales y Asociados. This proposal evolved into a formal collaboration agreement that gave rise to the Interinstitutional Research Group (GIDI), operating as a non-hierarchical consortium. This structure has allowed the group to leverage the experience, knowledge, talent, and resources of its members; consequently, GIDI has been a primary source of abundant information presented and analyzed in this and other reports.
The initiative seeks, first and foremost, to understand the economic impact of the pandemic at a more specific level than that provided by official statistics, focusing the study on regions and sectors with which GIDI members have significant ties. To maintain a high standard of quality and allow for regional, sectoral, and thematic comparisons, the same online questionnaire was administered, and official databases from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) were analyzed.
