This Seminar, whose thematic focus will be on Violence, continues a first edition held in 2020 in which Central Americanists from the region, on equal terms, advanced in updating academic research agendas and political and social intervention, strengthening existing networks between study groups focused on the Central American region (especially between Mexico and Argentina) and exchanging materials and resources to support the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in the region.

This Second Colloquium calls for the conceptualization, description, analysis, and explanation of the different types of violence in Central America around any of the following axes:

  • Theoretical discussions on violence in Central America
  • State violence perpetrated in favor of local and transnational capital, such as that perpetrated against defenders of natural resources
  • Illegal and illegitimate state violence such as crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of genocide, illegal detention, torture and enforced disappearance of persons
  • Violence perpetrated by clandestine and illegal structures linked to the State, such as organized crime, drug cartels, arms trafficking, the old intelligence structures forged during dictatorships and armed conflicts, or far-right organizations
  • Social violence, such as citizen security or work focused on the phenomenon of gangs
  • Structural violence, such as that produced by the neoliberal economic model, which leads to poverty, inequality and mass emigration.
  • Patriarchal violence, which ranges from femicide, trafficking of women, disappearance of
women and girls, including sexual abuse in professional or work settings
  • Racial violence, as one of the elementary forms of racism
  • Revolutionary violence, such as that used by the Latin American New Left between the 1960s and 1980s.
  • Symbolic violence, such as the reproduction of social roles, status, gender, social position, cognitive categories, or the representation of power in a covert and systematic way
  • Cyberviolence, practices through social networks and the virtual-digital world
  • Human rights in the context of violence

The Colloquium has no registration fee and certificates of participation will be awarded to the speakers.
