Structural heterogeneity and social inequality

The causes of structural poverty in Latin America continue to be the subject of extensive theoretical, political, and ideological debate. From our perspective, productive imbalances and persistent social inequalities are the underlying causes of poverty and social exclusion.

It is essential to establish a new public policy agenda that addresses economic, political, and social processes with a redistributive focus. This is especially true given the context of the global crisis and pandemic. The Latin American academic field cannot remain outside this debate. CLACSO Working Group on Structural Heterogeneity and Social Inequality It seeks to contribute to this goal with two objectives:

• To build an analytical framework on development and social inequality based on an update of the Latin American structuralist tradition, in light of global political and economic changes and new social processes.
• To contribute to giving content to the fundamental axes of a new public policy strategy aimed at overcoming the structural heterogeneity and socio-political conditions of exclusion that run through the region.
