“There is a climate change caused by humans”

Orlando Rey Santos, Advisor to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Cuba, Cooperation as an expert with various organizations, including FAO, ECLAC and UNDP, analyzed for CLACSO.tv the origin and effects of climate change in the world in general, and in the Caribbean in particular.

He understands that the environment is not something separate from people: “As scientists explain, the type of evidence of the change that is occurring indisputably demonstrates the human nature of this transformation. It is true that the climate has always changed, and to differentiate it from climate change, we speak of climate variability. There are all these geological periods and periods in human history that have existed with different temperatures and that continue to influence us today. Cuba, with and without climate change, is a country with a rainy season, a dry season, a warmer period, and a cooler period; that is not a consequence of climate change. But the correlation between the increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, generated by humans, and changes in the climate is symmetrical; it has a level of equivalence that no longer leaves much room for discussion.”
