| Without the Haitian Revolution, one cannot understand what "modernity" is. Its contradictions and complexities cannot be fully grasped. But Haiti's harrowing history, in a privileged way, clearly reveals something else: a counter-modernity, which is in fact a critique (etymologically, a questioning) of the falsely "totalizing" pretensions of Eurocentric modernity.
