Doing sociology in times of crisis and uncertainty

The Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of the Republic (Montevideo, Uruguay) organized the International Meeting of Sociology “Doing sociology in times of crisis and uncertainty”, on Wednesday, August 21, which was later extended with the Pre-ALAS Uruguay"Uruguayan society in times of change"On August 22nd and 23rd. The Executive Director of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences participated, Karina Batthyány, and various CLACSO Working Groups.

The International Sociology Meeting, “Doing Sociology in Times of Crisis and Uncertainty,” addressed issues related to the regional context, marked by multiple crises and transformations that pose new challenges for Latin American sociology. It was sponsored and supported by the International Sociological Association (ISA), the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), and the Latin American Sociological Association (ALAS).

In his speech, Karina Batthyány He argued that "if we want to continue building a transformative sociology of Latin American and Caribbean societies, we must work to overcome inequalities in academic production, strengthen our collaborative networks, and produce socially and politically relevant knowledge from critical reflection on our epistemological practices."

On the other hand, the Pre-ALAS event, "Uruguayan Society in Times of Change," offered a profound reflection on the national reality within the framework of the debates and mobilizations characteristic of the electoral period. In this context, more than 15 research groups from the Department of Sociology participated, presenting research findings and engaging in panel discussions on the Department's various lines of work. This event served as a prelude to the XXXIV ALAS International Congress, which will be held in the Dominican Republic from November 3 to 8.
