Violence in Central America

El CLACSO Working Group on Violence in Central America Its objective is to analyze the violence of social and political life in the Central American region, in a multidisciplinary dialogue with diverse theoretical and methodological approaches.

They favor the configuration of authoritarian political subjectivities, political subjectivities in resistance and new emerging collective subjects, the impacts of US geopolitics on the emergence of new forms of violence and the transformation of pre-existing ones, and finally, the historical continuity between past and present violence and the lessons learned about the processes of resistance.

The various ways in which violence is described (gender-based, revolutionary, urban, symbolic, structural, etc.) indicate the difficulty of arriving at a common definition of the phenomenon and the need for multidisciplinary approaches. Furthermore, it underscores that there is no single, inherent nature to violence.

There is no violence outside of the historical context.

That is the general perspective on which this group is based. We propose a rigorous analysis of the processes, mechanisms, actors, and spaces involved in violence.

We encourage a multidisciplinary and intersectional approach that integrates class, ethnicity, and gender.
