Childhoods and youth

El CLACSO Working Group on Children and Youth It seeks to reflect on, investigate, influence and make visible the main problems and potentialities of children and youth in Latin America and the Caribbean from a critical, decolonial and intersectional perspective.

The overall purpose of the Working Group is to contribute critical and situated knowledge, and to generate a transformative understanding that recognizes children and youth as political subjects with agency, challenging stigmatizing narratives and scenarios of persistent inequality in the Global South. Thus, 130 researchers from 16 countries are advancing towards critical, situated, and relational readings that allow us to denaturalize traditional interpretations of children and youth, and to challenge the normative and political frameworks that continue to reproduce their subordination.

The Working Group's proposals aim to improve and enhance the understanding of the situations and experiences faced by children and young people in the region. This will be achieved through research activities (using comparative contextual approaches), the dissemination of knowledge through various media and formats, and the creation and strengthening of ties with civil society organizations, activists, social movements, and public policy initiatives that defend the rights of children and young people. Ultimately, the Working Group proposes a series of diverse activities designed to discuss epistemic and methodological approaches to addressing childhood and youth issues within the context of the tensions and disputes over meaning that have been affecting democracies in the region.
