The 10th CLACSO Conference was inaugurated
On Monday, June 9, the León de Greiff auditorium at the National University of Colombia (UNAL) was overflowing with people and enthusiasm for the inauguration of the X Latin American Conference of Social Sciences.
The welcoming remarks were delivered byKarina Batthyány, Executive Director of CLACSO; Leopoldo Múnera, Rector of the UNAL; Jorge Iván Bula Escobar, Director of ESAP; Carolina Jimenez, Member of the CLACSO Steering Committee for Colombia and Vice-Rector of the UNAL Bogotá campus; and Pablo Vommaro, Executive Director-elect of CLACSO for the period 2025-2028.
Then, the city of Bogotá gave a special recognition to CLACSO for its valuable contribution to the production of critical knowledge in our region, and CLACSO Working Groups did the same with Karina Batthyány in recognition of her contribution to feminist struggles.
The Latin American Council of Social Sciences also awarded two of its Latin American and Caribbean Social Science Prizes to the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) of Brazil and the Ríos Vivos Movement of Colombia. This distinction celebrates trajectories and initiatives that enrich our democracies, our social struggles, and our ways of knowing.
A moment of great emotion and recognition was the tribute to Osvaldo Fats Borda on the 100th anniversary of his birth. A renowned Colombian academic and one of the founders of CLACSO in 1967 in Bogotá, Borda was honored with excerpts from his work read by Professor Normando Suárez and the young student Norman Esteban Gil.
Finally, Karina Batthyány coordinated the Master Dialogue “Democracy, human rights and peace: foundations for coexistence in the 21st century”, in which Álvaro García Linera from Bolivia, Víctor Manuel Moncayo from Colombia, and the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo from Argentina Irene Molinari de Chueque and Sara Mrad participated.
