In light of the events in Peru

The Steering Committee of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences regrets the frustration of the hopes for change in Peru that were expressed in the 2021 elections with the victory of Pedro Castillo as president who offered a profound social transformation for his country.

This frustration stems from the bitterness of right-wing political forces who have refused to accept Castillo's electoral victory since before he took office, through daily harassment of his administration, and culminating in three attempts to impeach him through Congress. It also arises from the inability of Pedro Castillo's government to fulfill its campaign promises and its refusal to address the corruption allegations against him.

In this context of acute polarization, the events of December 7th unfolded, constituting a failed coup d'état by the former president and leading, this time, to a successful impeachment led by the right wing. These events disrupt Peru's democratic stability and generate profound uncertainty for the Peruvian people. Therefore, we call for the country to be guided back to a path of democracy, peace, and respect for human rights, far removed from any authoritarian temptation. Likewise, we urge the Peruvian authorities to scrupulously respect the rights of former President Castillo and to treat him in accordance with due process. Furthermore, we emphasize the need for Peru's future to be decided by its citizens at the ballot box as soon as possible, under conditions that allow for political renewal and a return to a path of change.
