The Forum is organized by the Research and Training Program in Andean Agroecological Systems (CLACSO and the McKnight Foundation) in collaboration with SOCLA and the Political Agroecology Working Group. Agroecology stands as a transformative proposal for the food system and a replacement for current agricultural practices. It aims to provide an environmentally friendly approach to food production, as well as a viable alternative for small and medium-sized farmers, who are currently threatened by an increasingly extractive capitalist accumulation regime. Furthermore, and in conjunction with these processes, agroecology makes the discussion of access to land, water, and genetic resources one of its central focuses, especially in the countries of the region. Agroecology is understood as a science with an interdisciplinary approach, as well as a set of specific practices and methodologies, and a social movement that drives this transformation.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, with its wealth of ancestral knowledge and agroecological conditions, a unique process of tradition, research, and culture has emerged. Agroecology grows by transmitting its knowledge and building local alternatives to a dominant global food system that severely impacts the conditions for sustaining life. In this Forum, we will analyze the role of agroecology in Latin America from various perspectives, ranging from social, environmental, and productive issues to scaling up and future needs—social, political, cultural, environmental, and technical—with an emphasis on the processes of sustaining Andean and regional agroecology and promoting research and training within our Program.
