Academic program

-------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

The Master's Program in Anthropology is a high-level theoretical and practical program that highlights the disciplinary aspects that characterize and distinguish anthropology from other social sciences and humanities, while simultaneously situating it within the current problems of our contemporary cultures. A focus on the symbolic aspects of culture and an emphasis on qualitative methodologies, specifically the ethnographic method, will constitute the core of a disciplinary education grounded in the classical theoretical production of anthropology and its founders. However, in a context where disciplinary boundaries are becoming blurred when trying to understand the profound transformations of our societies, the Master's program aims to integrate transdisciplinarity into this core as an essential component of the training. An anthropology of contemporary worlds must necessarily embrace and promote interdisciplinary collaboration and contribute to the integrated analysis of current problems.
From this perspective, concern for the other and others is no longer about what is territorially distant and foreign, but rather about the multiculturalism that constitutes our contemporary societies. The problems of current anthropology consist not only in understanding how the patterns of globalization are imposed on our cultures, but also how new forms of racism and exclusion arise from this reality. More than an apologia for difference, it is about understanding how to move toward a democratic multiculturalism.

The Master's Program in Social Anthropology comprises a common core curriculum and three areas of specialization: ethnic studies, urban anthropology, and visual anthropology. Its objective is to provide advanced training for professionals, researchers, and professors at the highest level in the anthropological discipline, enabling them to analyze and understand contemporary issues. With a strong focus on Latin American studies, the program offers the opportunity to develop theoretical and methodological perspectives that contribute to bridging the gap between the classical discipline and the challenges of the modern world. These thematic areas address ethnic and multicultural issues, the challenges of urban life, audiovisual media, and the study of images. Furthermore, the program integrates courses in anthropological theory with courses in cultural policy analysis. The aim is to complement the in-depth study of theoretical aspects of the discipline with the optimization of professional practice, whether in teaching, advanced research, or the management of cultural policies.

The Master's program is designed for a universe of professionals and academics from diverse areas interested in developing and deepening anthropological and ethnographic knowledge that allows them to address the complexity of contemporary societies on a personal, qualitative and microsocial scale.
