Academic program
The overall objective of this Master's program is to analyze the Argentine economy and its international context throughout the 20th century. More specifically, it proposes to analyze the Argentine economy through an approach that links the historical evolution of economic policies and processes with social actors, transformations in the global economy, and changes in the local economic structure.
Although the Master's program recognizes the real economy and income distribution as its main object of analysis, monetary and financial phenomena are also incorporated into its curriculum, especially in the analysis of the last thirty years, where financial valuation - linked to external debt - is central and even incompatible with the country's productive expansion, to the point of having triggered an unprecedented process of deindustrialization at the national and regional level.
In this line of thought, it is appropriate to highlight that although it is an analysis and a specific vision of the Argentine economy, a constitutive part of the curriculum proposes to investigate and debate other analytical approaches to Argentine economic development, including the more technocratic ones and those based on neoliberal thought.
Based on the stated objectives, the Master's Program in Political Economy with a specialization in the Argentine Economy aims to complement the study of fundamental elements of economic theory with the historical, institutional, social, and international analysis necessary to understand the nature of each of the major stages of the Argentine economic process. The convergence of these diverse levels of analysis will be carried out respecting the specific content of each, but their development and depth will be determined by the analysis of Argentine political economy.
Based on the training acquired by the Master's students, the aim is to contribute to the training of researchers, public policy designers and trainers linked to social organizations, all of them specialized in the Argentine economy.
Background:
This Master's program falls within the field of economic research developed in the Area of Economics and Technology. The progress made in recent years led to the design and delivery of various intermediate courses and qualifications, which are the immediate precursors to the Master's program launched in March 2005.
The wealth of knowledge, methodologies, and analytical tools developed allowed researchers to consolidate their own perspective on the different stages through which the Argentine economy has passed. This task has been accomplished by linking macroeconomic, mesoeconomic, and microeconomic phenomena with the behavior of the various social groups that comprise the spheres of capital and labor; as well as through the study of the international context in which these phenomena develop, with the aim of recognizing the crucial differences between core and dependent countries.
