Academic program
The Center for Archaeological Studies (CEQ) of El Colegio de Michoacán, AC, since January 2001, shares with the other centers of our institution the core objectives of research and teaching in the social sciences and humanities, with an interdisciplinary approach grounded in theoretical and methodological dialogue with other disciplines whose objective is also the study of humankind. The CEQ's area of operation is geographically located in the Western region of Mexico, the almost natural setting of El Colegio de Michoacán, although this in no way constitutes a geographical limitation; rather, it is a starting point for a comprehensive understanding of issues with broader regional scope.
The location of the CEQ—in the city of La Piedad, on the border between Michoacán, Jalisco, and Guanajuato—allows for mobility that fosters an understanding of natural contexts, regardless of current political divisions, providing information for understanding the past. This leads to an explanation of the interrelationship between the various societies of the past and their environments, based on different scales of territorial analysis (from case studies to regional and interregional studies), which framed the political, economic, and sociocultural relationships between contemporary societies, mainly in western Mexico, viewed from a diachronic perspective.
The Center for Archaeological Studies now offers a Master's program in Archaeology, primarily aimed at archaeologists as a pathway for specialization in archaeological research, particularly in Western Mexico. This program is also open to professionals from other social sciences and related disciplines, in accordance with applicable laws, specifically the 1972 Federal Law on Archaeological, Artistic, and Historical Monuments and Zones.
The objective of the Master's Program in Archaeology is to provide students with a space where their interest as researchers in this discipline can materialize, from a thematic or regional perspective, enabling them to address the current demands of our country regarding archaeological heritage and its relationship with society. In this sense, the program aims to train students as professionals in research and teaching, and to ensure that archaeological practice has a direct connection with society through dissemination and outreach channels, as well as by influencing heritage conservation policies.
Other objectives are:
- to contribute to the production of archaeological knowledge by developing original and well-argued research
- to contribute to the specialization of professionals in the discipline, whose performance is based on a responsible and ethical attitude
- to promote interdisciplinary research where the approaches of archaeology converge with other disciplines
- to ensure that graduates of this program have a comprehensive education in regional archaeology, enabling them to excel in the study of the archaeological record and make original contributions within the discipline.

The Master of Science in Archaeology will be qualified to participate in the planning and implementation of original research projects, whether through individual work or interdisciplinary collaborations. Graduates of the CEQ will be dedicated professionals, highly trained in the theoretical and methodological aspects of the discipline, with an emphasis on anthropological principles in their work and a commitment to society.
