Oscar Ugarteche Galarza (1949-2026) has passed away

He died on Saturday, July 11 Oscar Ugarteche GalarzaA Peruvian intellectual and economist based in Mexico and an active member of CLACSO. He participated in various Working Groups, authored numerous publications, and was present at activities, seminars, and conferences of our Council.

As a professor and researcher at the Institute of Economic Research of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), he coordinated the Latin American Economic Observatory (OBELA), a space dedicated to regional economic analysis. He was also a pioneer in promoting the recognition of same-sex marriage in Peru and a leading figure in LGBT activism.

In a statement, the CLACSO Working Group “Geopolitics, Regional Integration and the World System” expressed “its deep sorrow for the passing” of its founding member and stated:

“His passing represents a great loss for critical thought. Óscar was one of the Latin American intellectuals who most profoundly studied the relationships between external debt, the international financial system, economic sovereignty, and regional integration. His extensive academic career was accompanied by an uncommon vocation for creating projects, bringing together researchers, opening new fields of debate, and transforming critical reflection into concrete institutional proposals.”
