Former Public Prison of Valparaíso

As we approach 2021, the Valparaíso Cultural Park is preparing to celebrate a decade of contributing to the region's cultural development. In this context, we are pleased to share the work of our Heritage Management Office in generating and disseminating knowledge, recognizing ourselves not only as the region's main cultural center but also as its most emblematic site of memory.
Indeed, the Cultural Park, in its current institutional development strategy, has a prominent role associated with the historic urban center of the port city of Valparaíso, as well as with its various socio-cultural processes, encompassing the Valparaíso Powder House (1805-) and the former Valparaíso Public Prison (1846-), and their system of territorial relations. These “national monuments,” as this collection makes clear, bear witness to the late colonial military defense and the confinement of social conflict in the city throughout its history, until its closure in 1999.
