Framed within a CSIC R&D project that aims to contribute to the analysis of the formation and change of territorial structures of well-being in Uruguay, this book offers a journey from the colonial era to the mid-20th century, exploring the types of settlements and localities that have shaped Uruguay's inhabited territory. It begins with a categorization of localities that identifies Indian, liberal, informal, ranchería, corporate, and railway types, based on their properties and the agents involved in their founding, planning, and formalization. It also extends to the specific spatial production of the northeastern frontier and the public initiative of agricultural colonization. The underlying hypothesis anticipates that these types imply heterogeneity not only in urban areas but also in terms of social structure and the provision of well-being.
