Numerous, highly original, and committed social movements have participated in multiple processes of resistance and political organization in recent years. These social upheavals, encompassing protests and grievances with a marked emphasis on feminist and gender, anti-racist, and anti-colonial movements, have ultimately challenged democratic institutions in the region. With the aim of investigating the characteristics of these movements and social protest actions and their links to political changes, democracy, and transformations in the configuration of state-society relations, CLACSO launched a research call for teams entitled “State, Democracy, and Social Movements in Latin America and the Caribbean: Continuities and Emergences in the 21st Century,” the results of which are presented in this book. The articles included here delve into the thorny issue of the nature of our Latin American democracies and the dissatisfactions they have generated. The members of the eight projects selected by the call immersed themselves in reality, using an explicit exercise of articulation between academia and activism that allowed them to see what the forms of intervention of the new social movements have been in favor of the expansion of these democracies in contexts of authoritarian regressions and health crisis.
