The Pontifical Bolivarian University (UPB) is a Colombian higher education institution with a presence at its main campus in Medellín since 1936. It also has branches in Bucaramanga, Montería, and Palmira, as well as in other regions such as Bogotá, and in Puerto Asís, Sibundoy, and Toribío, which operate Tutorial Support Centers. UPB has held high-quality accreditation since 2006, which was renewed in 2010 for its main campus in Medellín. In 2018, it received multi-campus institutional accreditation from the Colombian Ministry of Education.
In the early 1980s, the idea of a School of Social Sciences at UPB germinated with the purpose of coordinating efforts. In these first two decades of the 21st century, all these initiatives have converged into an academic project that proposes a formative and investigative dialogue on the realities of the individual, culture, and society, with an emphasis on Latin America from an interdisciplinary perspective, in dialogue with other Schools of the University such as Political Science, Education, Engineering, Economics, Design, Health, and Theology, and with national and international agreements that promote the academic mobility of students and professors.
In this way, the School of Social Sciences of the UPB is an academic-administrative unit that brings together a sector of knowledge and a set of disciplines that have cognitive affinity, but, above all, it is a space for research, teaching and transfer of knowledge concerning social, human and cultural problems from the knowledge of the four Faculties that make it up: Social Work, Social Communication, Advertising and Psychology, as well as from the great variety of postgraduate programs that constitute it, such as the Doctorate in Social Sciences and the Doctorate in Communication, the research Master's in Development (accredited with high quality), and other 11 postgraduate programs at the master's level and 7 of specialization.
Similarly, it has 8 research groups recognized by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Colombia, and since 2011 it has been a member center of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), an institution in which several of its professors participate in working groups, carrying out projects with researchers from all over Latin America and the Caribbean.
