"The expansion of the military presence in the region is worrying."

Within the framework of the forum "The New Dynamics of South-South Relations and the Challenges of Latin American Integration", held from April 22 to 25, at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Sasha Llorenti, former secretary general of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples' Trade Treaty of Bolivia, spoke with CLACSO.tv.

When analyzing global geopolitics, Llorenti referred to the Cold War years: “The Soviet Union was never economically comparable to the United States. It was always inferior, never an economic or commercial threat. The United States was the leading economic power. The situation now is not the same, because China is economically superior to the United States. Therefore, what the American empire has is the military power to control these geographic spaces, trade routes, expand its markets, etc.”

In this regard, the former Bolivian ambassador to the United Nations expressed his concern about the impact this has on Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasizing that “the expansion of the military presence in various strategic locations throughout the region is very worrying. And the precarious economic and social conditions within these countries lead to the rise of governments like those of Bolsonaro, Milei, and Noboa, which are economically regressive for the people and geopolitically subordinate to the United States.”
