"In Uruguay, children must be protected."

Within the framework of the international forum "Inequalities in Latin America: tensions, debates and proposals", held from April 16 to 18 in Montevideo, Uruguay, Carmen Midaglia, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the Republic, spoke with CLACSO.tv.

The Dean referred to the need to reach agreements on public policy in Uruguay: “I believe that we can reach partial agreements, despite the resistance to distributing and redistributing resources. We have a practically stagnant birth rate. Well, let's reach an agreement on childhood; who could possibly object? And let's develop a communication strategy that emphasizes that children cannot be on the streets; children must be protected. And surely, perhaps for the sake of impact, we will include some impoverished sectors.”

“That’s where we have to look for niches. Because we’re not going to get maximalist proposals in this scenario where individual culture has taken hold,” he stated.
