In defense of Argentine public universities

El CLACSO Working Group on Development and Territorial Inequalities: Critical Perspectives expresses its deep concern and solidarity with Argentine public universities, in light of the national government's decision to veto the restoration of the university budget.

We reaffirm the importance of the role of universities in reducing territorial inequalities, through their contribution to the generation of scientific knowledge in various areas, the training of professionals and their commitment to causes, social groups and matters of general interest.

Public universities are key players in territorial development, especially in the most disadvantaged areas. Their presence enables thousands of people to receive training and degrees who would otherwise lack access to higher education. Furthermore, they generate knowledge relevant to territorial development, which, when applied to public policy, stimulates economies and fosters numerous social dialogues.

For all these reasons, we strongly reject the unjust dismantling of the science and technology system and public higher education in Argentina. We support the current mobilizations of the educational communities, and we especially stand with our colleagues, who contribute so much in our shared spaces.
