“In Colombia we are building the foundations of a possible future”

Within the framework of the International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) “Reaction and resistance: Imagining possible futures in the Americas”, held from June 12 to 15 in Bogotá, Colombia, María José PizarroSenator of the Republic, representing the historic pact and a member of the negotiating team with the ELN, spoke with CLACSO.tv.

The Senator addressed the current situation in our region and asserted that there are “two absolutely antagonistic projects in dispute. Antagonistic in their forms, antagonistic in their construction, antagonistic in their models. It is as if we were already in completely different corners of the ring with increasingly fierce battles, but also increasingly degraded in the methods being used by this radical right wing, which is not only dystopian, but also capable of dismantling even the humanist achievements attained over decades.”

“We must be very clear that they may respect the democratic mechanism to get into government, but they will not respect the democratic mechanisms to remain in it,” he added.

In that sense, Pizarro stated the challenge that many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean face: "how do we defend what is essential, life, democracy in its essential construction, because they are not going to respect it" and, in the case of his country, he assured that "in Colombia we are building the foundations of a possible horizon."
