Democracy won in Chile

In an election that is key for Chile and for our entire region, the Chilean people have given a resounding NO to the far-right candidate José Antonio Kast, voting overwhelmingly for Gabriel Boric, as a clear expression of defense of democracy and giving continuity to the great struggles of their history, particularly those initiated in the country in October 2019.

Shortly after the closing of the elections on Sunday, December 19, Kast, of the Republican Party, accepted defeat at the hands of Boric, who led a broad coalition that includes, among other forces, the Broad Front, the Communist Party and Libertarian Left.

The Latin American Council of Social Sciences congratulates the president-elect and the Chilean people on this new lesson in democracy and freedom, which undoubtedly provides encouragement for the struggles of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean in their search for greater social justice.

At a time when Chile is debating a new Constitution that will definitively bury the one it inherited from the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, Boric's clear victory will give more impetus to the search for a Magna Carta that represents the yearning for democracy, freedom, equality and inclusion of Chileans, accompanying the progressive advance that is being renewed in many countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
