Duration: 1 month

Is the era of US hegemony coming to an end? Why has China become a central player in world politics? What role do the BRICS and the Global South play in shaping the new international landscape? Are we witnessing the emergence of a multipolar world?

In a context marked by wars, geopolitical disputes, economic transformations and accelerated technological changes, this course offers tools to understand the profound reconfigurations of global power and the challenges of the contemporary international order.

The course is delivered online. It consists of four synchronous (live) sessions held via Zoom. Participants have access to exclusive materials in the virtual classroom.

  • Lessons from the past: Analysis of historical examples and key experiences of the twentieth century.
  • The current reality: The failed attempt to build a unipolar world and the ephemeral existence of the new American century.
  • New tendencies: The scope of “de-Westernization” and the emergence of the Global South.
  • Economic reconfiguration: A capitalism that needs to be "reset" (Schwab, Davos, etc.).
  • The future of power: The exceptional nature of the current transition and the prospects for a multipolar and post-hegemonic world.
  • Signs of wear: Numerous factors of breakdown in the international system.
  • Obsolete institutions: Rules and institutions that reflected the situation of the second post-war period and the illusion of unipolarity.
  • The end of an era: The decline of the supposedly invincible triad of the eighties (USA, Europe and Japan).
  • Internal factors in the US: The neoliberal canon, deindustrialization, economic financialization and its financial crisis.
  • Geopolitical impact: A country with endless wars and its possible transition from a great global hegemon to a regional hegemon.
  • Lack of harmony: The lack of correspondence between the international system and the current international order.
  • New protagonists: Proliferation of actors from the Global South, BRICS, megacorporations, NGOs, social networks and organized crime.
  • Conflicting blocs: The crisis in traditional institutions such as NATO in the face of the advance of China's Belt and Road Initiative.
  • Multilateral paralysis: The crisis of the United Nations system, the unrepresentativeness of the Security Council, and the impotence of the UN.
  • The awakening of Asia: The sudden and unexpected rise of China, the resurrection of Russia, and the awakening of India.
  • Technological revolution: The fourth industrial revolution, the information galaxy, and the surprising reconfiguration of its leaders.
  • A map under construction: An unfinished process, still in its early stages on the global stage.
  • Contending forces: The analysis of the dynamic and retarding actors in this process of change.
  • The new balance: The irresistible rise of China versus the slow but unstoppable decline of US power.
  • Global costs: The wars of the empire and their disastrous consequences for world stability.
