The Central American isthmus: peripheral epistemological perspectives
The CLACSO Working Group "The Central American Isthmus: Peripheral Epistemological Perspectives" is the academic arm of the Central American Articulation "O Istmo," a Central American socio-political and cultural initiative active since 2014. We are in the fourth three-year period of links with CLACSO with the general objective of strengthening an agenda of research, reflection and collective action on the contemporary realities of Central America from a critique situated in the Global South.
To this end, we seek to consolidate what we call the "Isthmian Perspective," our own theoretical and epistemological framework, promoting the production, dissemination, and connection of interdisciplinary knowledge on diasporas, democracy, authoritarianism, territoriality, extractivism, spirituality, pedagogy, culture, art, peoples, and social movements in the Central American isthmus. Likewise, we aim to connect academic networks, social organizations, and cooperation institutions to foster collaborative projects with public impact and a commitment to social and environmental justice in Central America.
The CLACSO Working Group on the Isthmus of Central America also aims to expand spaces for Central Americanist training, communication, and creative work through publications, audiovisual productions, seminars, and meetings that contribute to making visible the experiences, knowledge, and resistance of Central American peoples and their diasporas. In this way, it aspires to strengthen ties between intellectual production and social struggles, fostering the construction of democratic, inclusive, and emancipatory alternatives in the Central American isthmus.
