The pandemic that has plagued the planet since early 2020 subjects us to multiple challenges as a society, given the certainty that individual action is limited by the scope of the crisis, which has once again brought into question various aspects of the social organization in which we live. The cultural and the everyday, the political and the economic, are designed for a life without isolation and without a pandemic.
But this unprecedented situation forces us to rethink our entire social system.
However, prior to the pandemic, the pandemic arrived, profoundly altering the lives of our societies. It quickly became evident that strong state intervention—observed practically worldwide—was necessary to counteract the tremendous socio-economic effects, which implied the need to broaden and deepen our understanding of social security.

Latin America already exhibited enormous social, political, and economic problems and contradictions: poverty, inequality, informal employment, among others. Shouldn't we
So, in any case, have we rethought our social system?

It is time for social protection systems to face the challenge of becoming an indispensable element of social policy, economic reorganization, and health policy, but starting from a base where it was already insufficient.

This document presents the main reflections of key institutional figures who participated in the third meeting of the Conversation Series on Social Security and Pension Systems, organized by FES, IADE, and CLACSO. They discussed the social challenges of the pandemic: Simone Cecchini, Svenja Blanke, Karina Batthyány, and Fernanda Raverta.
