The right to the city in the face of current challenges
CLACSO Working Group on Urban Inequalities
The CLACSO Working Group on Urban Inequalities presents the launch of Working Paper #2, “The Right to the City Facing Current Challenges.” This issue is a joint initiative of CLACSO and the Global Platform for the Right to the City (PGDC).
For more than half a century, the right to the city has been a dynamic paradigm, fueled by both academic contributions and the mobilization, demands, and proposals of organizations and neighborhoods around the world. The (re)distribution of material goods goes hand in hand with the democratization of decision-making, in a conceptualization of the city that emphasizes its character as a political community and socio-ecological territory whose dynamics cannot be confined to administrative boundaries. This represents a revisited notion of citizenship, one that detaches it from nationality status and anchors it instead in access to rights and opportunities for a dignified life in the places we inhabit.
Furthermore, understanding the right to the city as a dynamic paradigm, this publication aims to be a space for new and renewed research questions and lines of action regarding urban inequalities. In this sense, the Working Paper Series is also an open invitation to continue questioning reality from the perspective of collective memory and reflecting together on the opportunities for transformation that are available to us and that we must continue to create.
