Produced within the framework of the project “Prevention and monitoring of COVID-19 in municipalities of the Greater Buenos Aires area from a multidimensional perspective”, directed by researcher Rodrigo Carmona, the Institute of the Greater Buenos Aires area of ​​the National University of General Sarmiento (Argentina) presents a series of materials on the times of the pandemic.


-“The Greater Buenos Aires area during the pandemic. Scope and challenges from a multidimensional perspective”

This book presents the main results achieved in the second half of 2020 of the project “Prevention and monitoring of COVID-19 in municipalities of the Greater Buenos Aires area from a multidimensional perspective”, selected by the National Agency for the Promotion of Research, Technological Development and Innovation (I+D+i Agency) of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MINCYT), during the year 2020.

This work analyzes the impacts of the pandemic in Greater Buenos Aires and is organized into three parts. The first, entitled “Living in Greater Buenos Aires: Problems, Conflicts, and Strategies in the Context of a Pandemic,” brings together contributions related to the main issues affecting household life and the strategies of actors within the territory. The second part, titled “Conditions of Production and Employment in the Face of COVID-19,” addresses production and labor issues, focusing on the manufacturing industry, labor disputes, an analysis of the social and solidarity economy, and the operation of wholesale fruit and vegetable markets at the metropolitan level during the different stages of the health emergency. The third part, centered on “State Capacities in Relation to Social Assistance, Health, and Security” during the pandemic, examines the political and institutional capacities of municipalities to manage food assistance, healthcare, and security, considering the policies implemented and the challenges related to the competencies of the different levels of government involved.

This latest series of reports analyzes the recent impacts of the coronavirus pandemic in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area and develops proposals for action and the development of public policies.

With a focus on central issues in the lives of the population and public management in times of crisis (socio-territorial conflict, production and work, state capacities in relation to social development, health and security), the final phase of a year of studies addresses territorial problems and transformations that have occurred at the municipal and regional levels.

The results correspond to the fourth and final stage of the research “Prevention and monitoring of COVID-19 in municipalities of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area from a multidimensional perspective”, carried out with the support of the National Agency for the Promotion of Research, Technological Development and Innovation (I+D+i Agency) within the framework of a study involving universities and institutions throughout the country.
