“Knowledge is horizontal”

Ana Esther Ceceña Martorella, a Mexican researcher and member of the Institute of Economic Research at UNAM, participated in her country in early February in the Conversation “Neoliberal Authoritarianism or Democratizing Democracy?: The Dispute for the Future in Latin America”, jointly organized by CLACSO and the “University Program of Studies on Democracy, Justice and Society” (PUEDJS-UNAM).

In an interview with CLACSO TV, he stated that “Knowledge, wisdom, is horizontal and not vertical. So, we have to pull our criteria in that direction so that we can begin to confront the common sense of neoliberal science.”

In another matter, Ana Esther Ceceña Martorella understands that "theThe circuits of power remain the circuits of power. For me, power isn't in the government; it passes through it, but in reality, the power groups continue to operate from their positions, from their spaces. So, what happens with these progressive or more democratic governments is that they are a gamble. I would say they are a gamble by society. If we think about the case of Mexico, and I even think it could be similar in Argentina today, it's society that has actually advanced to put a stop to certain things… If society continues working, continues mobilizing, continues pushing things forward, then it will yield very good results. But if society, after the election, says, 'Our candidate has won, everything will be fine,' and sits back and waits, then it's a disaster. In that case, even if the governments themselves wanted to, they can't promote the transformations they are proposing. The idiosyncrasies of peoples are very complicated.”
