The capital of hope

The experience of workers in the construction of Brasilia

Author: Gustavo Lins Ribeiro.

Presentation: Hernán M. Palermo.

Gustavo Lins Riberio combines and challenges theory with fieldwork to unravel the meanings that workers attribute to the construction of Brasília. This allows him to reconstruct a collective memory encompassing hardships, anger, resentment, labor injustices, solidarity, friendships, family, loyalties, the flavors of food, music, organization, unions, and conflicts—all in a disordered yet theoretically legible whole. Ultimately, the experience of class can be read in *The Capital of Hope* in a transversal way, as can the contradictions of capitalism, urban policies, working conditions, and other problematic areas addressed by the social sciences. We invite you to read—for the first time or once again—this masterful work that allows us to understand and deepen our understanding of the dynamics of capitalist expansion and, in particular, to reveal the precarity, inequality, and instability that have long plagued Latin America.
