The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the social, economic, and environmental vulnerabilities of our societies. At the same time, it has highlighted the importance of public welfare systems and the capacity of citizens to organize. Thus, the health and social crisis has led to the emergence of a myriad of solidarity initiatives worldwide, which have proven essential in addressing the spread and effects of the pandemic. This volume studies the birth, development, and importance of these mutual support initiatives in Latin American and Southern European countries. The book constitutes both an analysis of the potential and limitations of citizen action and a call for its consolidation and expansion. Its authors belong to SOLIVID, a network of research groups created to disseminate and study the solidarity initiatives that arose to address the pandemic. SOLIVID, founded in April 2020, comprises 34 university research groups from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, France, Italy, Mexico, and Portugal.
