Upon learning of his passing on December 31, 2018, reactions from several prominent social scientists across the continent reflected the profound loss we feel. Gerónimo de Sierra, the Uruguayan sociologist, wrote: “Hail to the master! Many years of struggle and foundational contributions to the analysis of his country and all of Central America. He is, we are, an entire generation of Latin American social scientists who are gradually completing their life cycle.”
