Ecuador facing crises
With the pandemic, the economic crisis, and now the war, society faces a complex moment that pushes our very existence to the limit, but it's not solely about the growing contagion and death of the population. It's about the limitations of political society, governments, and elites in constructing a "humane" response. Long before the pandemic, and despite the demands of the population, governments pursued a strategy that guarantees the reproduction of the elites and places the costs of the crisis on the working class, the care economy—primarily carried out by women—and the destruction of public spaces and nature.
The present moment is fraught with uncertainty. While the material conditions for society's survival deteriorate, we are still assessing the situation. The crisis has presented society with a great challenge; the uncertain future demands a creative debate that allows us to understand the moment and broaden our critical perspectives with a view to expanding political options for the reproduction of life. A broad social coalition of forces is needed, in which researchers and the social sciences can contribute by questioning and deconstructing the established reality.
“Ecuador facing crises” is an initiative of the CLACSO member centers in Ecuador to reflect on the current situation.
