Popular economies. Theoretical and practical mapping

The CLACSO Working Group on Popular Economies: Theoretical and Practical Mapping aims to contribute to the conceptualization of popular economies as modes of reproduction of the lives of the majority.

in our region and as heterogeneous and variegated strategies for stabilization and contestation of new labor dynamics.

Amid profound transformations in the forms of work, exploitation, and capital accumulation, we investigate these networks at a transnational level in relation to the multiple social, economic, ecological, and political crises, where new subjectivities, organizational dynamics, forms of struggle, union experiments, production practices, and disputes over the commons emerge. 

Furthermore, the aim is to deepen the debates surrounding the relationship between the informal economy and social reproduction, while simultaneously incorporating and reconceptualizing a gender perspective that values ​​care and domestic economies as fundamental elements in the construction of their everyday structures. Then, the project will explore the intersections, relationships, and resonances between informal economies, feminist economics, and political ecology to address the materialities and ontologies produced and reproduced within these economies.

Finally, we will investigate migration patterns, the strategies of migrant workers, urban, rural, and Indigenous grassroots infrastructure, and the capacity to create popular institutions. And lastly, we will map the relationship of grassroots economies with public policies and with financial dynamics, both formal and informal, and their connections to multiple scales and logics of indebtedness, speculation, and extraction.
