World Teachers' Day
Held annually on October 5 since 1994, the World Teachers' Day It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation – in 1966 – concerning the Status of Teachers. It establishes benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teaching and research staff in higher education, as well as standards for their initial training and professional development, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.
World Teachers' Day has become an occasion to highlight the progress made and to reflect on ways to address the remaining challenges in order to promote the profession.
For World Teachers' Day, UNICEF, UNDP, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Education International issued a joint message:
"With the theme 'Young teachers: the future of the professionWe recognize the critical importance of reaffirming the value of the teaching profession. We urge governments to make teaching a first-choice profession for young people. We also invite teachers' unions, private sector employers, school principals, parent-teacher associations, school management committees, education officials, and teacher trainers to share their knowledge and experiences to foster the emergence of a vibrant teaching force. Above all, we celebrate the work of dedicated teachers around the world who continue to strive every day to make quality, inclusive, and equitable education and the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all a reality in every corner of the planet.
