International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
The commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty dates back to October 17, 1987. On that day, more than one hundred thousand people gathered in the Trocadero Square in Paris, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights had been signed in 1948, to pay tribute to the victims of extreme poverty, violence, and hunger. Those gathered there proclaimed that poverty is a violation of human rights and affirmed the need to join forces to guarantee respect for those rights.
In its resolution 47/196, the United Nations General Assembly invited all states to dedicate the Day to presenting and promoting concrete activities for the eradication of poverty and destitution.
The focus for 2025 is on ending social and institutional abuse by ensuring respect and effective support for families.
Since its founding, CLACSO has addressed poverty eradication through research, knowledge dissemination, and the organization of events and dialogues, focusing on Latin America and the Caribbean, but also incorporating global experiences such as those of China. This includes the analysis of social policies, the definition and measurement of poverty, and the promotion of strategies for its reduction.
