International LGBTQ+ Pride Day
International LGBTQ+ Pride Day, also known as "Gay Pride Day," is celebrated every year on June 28. This date originated as a tribute to the victims of the Stonewall riots in New York City in 1969, where, after a violent confrontation with the police, the gay liberation movement began.
On the occasion of “International Gay Pride Day”, The LGBTQ+ community organizes public celebrations, street parades, and popular festivals, proudly displaying the rainbow flag, seeking to expand the community's rights year after year and inviting society to reflect on education in diversity and equal rights.
While globally several countries are witnessing an expansion of the rights of people with different sexual orientations or gender identities, and are educating towards a more understanding, diverse, and inclusive society, there are also some worrying setbacks. The most blatant case is undoubtedly Brazil, where, since Jair Bolsonaro took office as president on January 1, 2019, attacks and discrimination against members of the LGBTQ+ community have multiplied. But it is not the only case.
“A few years ago, Latin America projected to the world a cohesive and integrated region with growth and with social and citizen rights and protection of the rights of minorities, and today that is in question.” denounced it on CLACSO Radio Esteban Paulón, Vice President of the Argentine Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Trans, Undersecretary of Sexual Diversity of the Government of the province of Santa Fe and member of the Steering Committee of the Gay Latino network.
Interviewed on May 17 to discuss the “International Day Against Homophobia,” which commemorated 29 years since the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses in 1990, Paulón called for "To join forces and generate a joint struggle that will allow us to stop the advance of the right wing in our region."
