International Migrants Day

December 18th is International Migrants Day, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000 in response to the increase in migration flows worldwide.

One of the main precedents for the creation of this commemoration lies in the adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families by the UN in 1990. Then, in 2016, it approved a set of measures that materialized in the New York Declaration on Refugees and Migrants, which recognizes the positive work of migrants and commits to protecting the safety, dignity, freedom and human rights of migrants.

Despite this, migrants still face discrimination, inequality, stigmatization, xenophobia, racism, and various forms of intolerance. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic and the measures implemented in response have had a disproportionately negative impact on the lives of migrants.

For CLACSO, migration has been a central theme in its declaration of principles since its founding in 1967, reflected in its research, conferences, and publications, and is a key focus of its Platforms for Social Dialogue. Among others, the following materials are noteworthy:
