Day of Persons with Disabilities
Since the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed December 3 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in 1992, this date has been celebrated worldwide with the aim of promoting the rights and well-being of people with disabilities in all areas of society and raising awareness about anti-discrimination practices towards this group, as well as raising awareness about their situation in all aspects of political, social, economic and cultural life.
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006, has further advanced the rights and well-being of these individuals in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other international development frameworks, such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Charter on the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Humanitarian Action, the New Urban Agenda, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development.
The rights of persons with disabilities are a priority issue on the MERCOSUR agenda. Within the framework of the Meeting of High Authorities on Human Rights of MERCOSUR (RAADH), the Permanent Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was created to facilitate the coordination of regional public policies on this matter. Furthermore, under the IPPDH's South-South Cooperation Program, two editions of the MERCOSUR-Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) Regional Seminar, entitled "Public Policies for the Promotion and Protection of Persons with Disabilities," have been held. This seminar has been jointly organized with the Brazilian Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights and the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC).
