Did you know that Latin America and the Caribbean is the most unequal region in the world?

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, inequalities have increased in Latin America and the Caribbean. Twelve million young people, including children, have been excluded from education; six out of ten young people are employed in informal and precarious conditions; and four out of ten lack any monetary income.

What can we do to develop public and social actions that help overcome inequalities among young people in this region?

The UNESCO MOST Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean, the Network for Studies on Inequalities of El Colegio de México and CLACSO invite students, policymakers, researchers, activists, journalists and youth leaders to the free massive open online course (MOOC) Inequalities and youth in Latin America and the Caribbean.

This MOOC explores the challenges of inequalities associated with youth in our region, proposes strategies to address them, and suggests ways to encourage participation, social inclusion, and the fulfillment of human rights.

“This course shows how inequalities affect critical aspects of young people’s lives in our region: access to education, the right to health, and job opportunities. Life stories, strategies for overcoming adversity, and art for transformation: that’s what this course is about,” shares Luis Carrizo, Academic Coordinator. The course presents four key themes, each examined from a cross-cutting perspective:

• Its connection with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda
• The strategic perspective of the MOST program and the Network of Studies on Inequalities of El Colegio de México that strengthens the link between knowledge and public policies.
• The gender perspective
• The socio-territorial approach

The organizing entities, with the generous participation of institutions and experts from different latitudes, seek to raise awareness among participants about the challenges of inequalities associated with youth in our region, and to propose strategies for achieving equitable, inclusive and sustainable development, showing the importance of dialogue between research and public policies, with special emphasis on the participation of youth in the discussion and decision-making process.
