Inequalities and Democracies: A Dialogue between Latin America and Europe
On Friday, November 10, the Carlos III University of Madrid hosted the Seminar “Inequalities and Democracies: A Dialogue between Latin America and Europe"organized by the Spanish State Secretariat for the 2030 Agenda and UC3M, in collaboration with the Latin American Council of Social Sciences, with the participation –among other members of CLACSO– of its Executive Director Karina Batthyány, who participated in the Opening alongside Angel AriasUC3M Rector, already Ione BelarusMinister of Social Rights and Agenda 2030; and of the closing conference: “The many faces of inequality. Equity and democracy in Europe and Latin America” together with Mercedes D'Alessandro (PhD in Economics, writer and teacher, Argentina) and Lilith Verstrynge (Secretary of State for the 2030 Agenda, Spain), who was also present at the closing with Florabel Quispe (Deputy Vice-Rector for Sustainable Development and Healthy Campuses at UC3M).

The organizers maintain that, “In the current global context, democracy is at risk. The dynamics of economic inequality and the breakdown of welfare models represent a rupture of the material foundations of citizenship, with the consequent crisis of democracy. This is translating into increasing global militarization, with the war in Ukraine as a backdrop, and a political hollowing out of multilateral initiatives and organizations, primarily the United Nations. Furthermore, as an underlying structural trend, the ecological crisis foreshadows a world in which climate change and the scarcity of natural and energy resources will affect the minimum biological conditions for life on the planet. In the words of the current Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres: 'Humanity has opened the gates of hell.'”
In this context, the scientific community, universities, and institutions have a dual civic obligation. They must deepen their research and dissemination of the causes of inequality and the ecological crisis in order to, based on critical and specialized knowledge, intervene politically in society with the aim of promoting the necessary changes to safeguard democracy and the minimum conditions for a dignified life. With this objective, the State Secretariat for the 2030 Agenda of the Spanish Ministry of Social Rights and 2030 Agenda and the Carlos III University (UC3M), in collaboration with the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) and within the framework of the Chair of Sustainability, have decided to launch the International Seminar 'Inequalities and Democracies: A Dialogue between Latin America and Europe'. This collaboration offers an opportunity to share, discuss, and review analyses of inequality from a comparative perspective—Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean—seeking solutions and synergies on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean for common problems that require international cooperation to be resolved.
